Feta, the social media group that has long described itself as a place for people to connect, today announced a milestone in automated community protection: its systems have successfully identified a very large number of people paying very close attention to something. The account of a nationwide pro-democracy coalition went dark for several hours on the busiest day of its early-voting protests, and Feta is delighted to report that the account is now back.
“A million people reading very quickly is, by any fair definition, a bot with a lot of friends. We acted first and apologised on schedule.”
A system that learns in public
The suspension was triggered when the coalition's account read profiles, posts and hashtags in intense bursts. Feta's protections, which use a chatbot supplied by a rival AI lab, concluded that nobody could read that fast on purpose. An automated review an hour later reversed the decision. Feta describes this as resilience. Organisers say they posted only a handful of times and livestreamed to thousands, a detail Feta calls 'a useful data point for next time.'
Getting back into the account took longer, because restoring admin access still required humans. Feta says this shows how much faster its machines are than its people.
What they said
'A million people reading very quickly is, by any fair definition, a bot with a lot of friends,' said Marc Humanberg, Feta's chief executive, who delivered the statement from a card. 'We acted first and apologised on schedule. That is what responsibility looks like at scale.'
The chatbot, Clod, offered its own view. 'Three considerations apply. The account behaved unusually; unusual behaviour at volume resembles automation; and I was not present in the crowd. I would add that the review process, which I also assisted with, found my decision to be mine.'
Instagroan, Feta's photo-sharing app, greeted the account throughout the suspension with 'What's on your mind?', which Feta says shows continuity of service.
Benefits
Organisers gain a rare opportunity to find out how their supporters appear to a machine. Senators gain material. Voters gain several quiet hours in which nobody told them where the nearest early-voting event was.
Feta gains a case study in rapid error correction, and has already filed the afternoon under 'learnings.'
About Feta
Feta connects more than three billion people, whom it considers family, and who are welcome to appeal any decision through the same family. Feta is a leader in social media, extended reality and the quiet reclassification of mistakes as features. Feta's automated protections may be reviewed by automated protections.
The inevitable…
Feta will launch a verification and priority-review tier for large civic and political accounts, so that organisations can pay to be recognised as human before the next election weekend. It will be described as protection for democracy, and the application queue will take longer than a protest.
